Family Time in Our Community

Inn from the Cold is the only place that homeless families can access on the weekend – all other social agencies are closed. On the weekends, we give our guests a chance to have some fun, while learning new skills through hands-on learning in the community and in-house events. Our families visit places like the Calgary Zoo, Calaway Park, Telus World of Science, movie theatres and other places.

The weekend family program gives families a chance to practice being a family unit, often a skill that is neglected due to crisis and/or change. Many guests have shared how they appreciate the chance to “just be a normal family” for a few hours.

How It Works

Before each activity, families are required to participate in a small group discussion focusing on a particular social skill for the day. There are learning exercises and short teaching activities to facilitate learning. Afterwards, this skill must be practiced in the community while on the planned activity.

It is only through the generous support of the Calgary community that we are able to provide our families with the opportunity for fun, learning and quality family time together. We welcome the donation of attraction and restaurant passes. For more information, e-mail weekend@innfromthecold.org.
