"Many people don't realize that homeless families and individuals are simply trying to live a normal life, but it's almost impossible without stable housing," says Executive Director Yvette Rasmussen. "Sometimes it's just the littlest things that are so challenging for our families to accomplish."
Over the past several months, we have seen a dramatic increase in families seeking our help.
Unlike emergency shelters for individuals, family emergency shelters are at capacity, despite serving more families. Here are some of the facts about our shelter:
-
An average of 50 guests are admitted each day to Inn from the Cold
-
Between two to three of our guests daily are pregnant
-
On average over half of our guests are children under 17 years of age
-
Approximately two ESL families arrive each day
-
60% of our families are Aboriginal
Ending family homelessness is part of Calgary's 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness. Our community, partner agencies, government and corporate Calgary are all part of the solution in making sustainable and lasting change. Even the littlest things will make a big difference, but we need your help. Donate, volunteer, host an event or help spread the word. Working together, we can make a big change in our community.
